Tie It Teal

Tie it Teal logoRobbinsdale Cooper High School and the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA) invite you to join the Tie It Teal campaign and help spread awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this September.

MOCA provided free teal shoelaces to all Cooper athletes this fall to show support and spread awareness about ovarian cancer.

Cooper High School is proud to support MOCA and the Tie it Teal Campaign in support of Barbara A. Lehman former Cooper High School Athletic Director.  During her tenure as the first female athletic director in the school’s history, Lehman developed high speed swimming programs and intramural programs for volleyball and basketball, spearheaded initiatives for improved facilities, and devoted much of her energy and time working for gender equity in high school athletics.

Shortly after her retirement, Lehman was diagnosed with ovarian cancer which metastasized to her brain.  She continued treatment on and off for more than six years. Lehman had been active in retirement, serving as Robbinsdale Area Schools’ wellness coordinator and consultant and coaching boys’ golf at Cooper until 2008.  In 2009, the Robbinsdale Area School Board voted unanimously to rename the stadium at Robbinsdale Cooper High School after Lehman.  The dedication of Barbara A. Lehman Stadium took place on September 4, 2009.

Did you know?...
    •    Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers...
    •    There is NO reliable screening test for ovarian cancer...
    •    Women at any age can get ovarian cancer...

This year alone, nearly 400 here in Minnesota will die from the disease. Nationally, 15,000 women will die from ovarian cancer this year.  Because there is no test, it is crucial to know the symptoms of this disease. That’s why MOCA works to Tie it Teal with athletic teams across the state to spread awareness during the month of September!
