Cooper students deliver custom creations to young learners
Students in the Civil Engineering and Architecture classes at Cooper High School are sharing their skills with younger students in the district. They partnered with the Robbinsdale Early Learning program, housed at New Hope Learning Center, to build small-scale wood projects for the playground and classrooms.
The classes visited the spaces earlier in the year to brainstorm ideas for creations that would be helpful. Using construction theory and technique, in addition to simple woodworking, students created a variety of projects this spring—a balance beam, a mini-fridge, a set of large toy blocks, a playground cart, a set of stairs, and a small bookshelf.
“It was a great experience, and it gave me a lot of things to look forward to, as I want to go into engineering,” said junior George Kelly, who helped make the playground cart. “It felt really good to make something that the younger kids could use and play with. I’m proud of myself and my team for what we were able to make.”
The students dropped off their completed projects on May 21, placing them in the playground for the younger students to discover and in classrooms for staff to utilize.
