Enter the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Human Rights Contest for youth

The Golden Valley Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission (DEIC) is holding its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Human Rights Contest for youth.

This contest is open to all Robbinsdale Area School students in grades K-12. Students may enter any creative submission, including, but not limited to, artwork, essays, poetry, videos, songs or raps. Audio or video entries can be submitted through YouTube or other multimedia platforms. The deadline of submissions is 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022. (See flyer for details.)

Themes and submission groupings:

• The pre-K through kindergarten theme is inclusion, and the quote to be used is "We cannot walk alone."
• The grades 1-3 theme is equality/justice, and the quote to be used is "If we cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way."
• The grades 4-7 theme is equality/justice, and the quote to be used is "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend."
• The grades 8-12 theme is equality/justice, and the quote to be used is "The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand at times of challenge and controversy." *(”man” has been changed to “person” and “he” to “they”).

Entries can be submitted via email to tolmo@goldenvalleymn.gov. They can also be mailed or dropped off to: Tara Olmo, 7800 Golden Valley Rd, Golden Valley, MN 55427.

Winners will be announced Thursday, Dec. 29. A $100 cash prize will be given to one student in each grade range, and winners will be recognized at a City Council meetings and at the Sweet Potato Comfort Pie event set for Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at Brookview.
